The Donor Rap thread biz was interesting, and though I have read a bit about it via Phil news and such, I wonder: is it always the same? is it always by one member? what charities do they "hype" during it? do they actually provide a means to do it at shows? ie, take up collections? sign-up for organ donar status--is that what they are about?

I suppose I could stream a couple shows and listen for myself, but fig'd you all could answer more quickly and spare me the effort and...ahem...pain.

Others will no doubt , give a fuller answer ; but it is usually Phil saying he wouldn't be here making music if not for one man , and to become an organ donor and save lives , etc. He varies it a little )"hey, could save someone as weird as me "), but it is mostly the same . With Phil and friends , he then introduces the band, but usually , not with Further . Sometime, with Bobby, and Mickey on board ("The Dead") you get some "get out a vote" thing around the elections . It lasts usually less than a minute , so you could stream anyone , and get the gist .
It does get alittle old ,after all these years, but I salute his honoring the organ donor , whose liver is what is keeping him alive .

Thanks MC & DD; I guess I shoulda fig'd it was only organ donor related, and led by Phil...so I am more or less familiar with that pitch. I just didn't know if sometimes they went with "save the whales" or rainforest, or...redwoods and groves and the like...or, research on prostate cancer given Phil's history.

EDIT: Ah, my only comment is that of all of them, I probably respect Phil the most (I know, I know--back peddling on "love the art, not the artist"), but I do sometimes wonder about the person that was a health nut in need of a liver transplant wondering how Phil (by his own account "he drank it to failure", right?) got it instead...? No biggie, but just as a smoker, in my view, shouldn't be one to get a lung transplant over anyone else...just assuming there are always waiting lists and such, and that $ and fame buys access, etc...it certainly was true in terms of his prostate treatment [trust me, as one that has been down that road, and read up on treatment options and the like, he got the Royal Treatment, which of course, I'd have pursued as well if I had the big bucks].

My understanding was that the main problems with Phil's liver were caused by undetected hepatitis(B?)that he had contracted back in the early days. I'm sure that heavily drinking didn't help much and the way that he contracted the hep was probably not "kosher" either, but I'm pretty sure he wrote in his book that that was the reason for the liver problems.

according to Phil's book, he suspects he contracted it during a short period of time in the early 60's during which he was using methedrine intravenously

i wonder a LOT more about Crosby. He was a nasty wreck.Although I guess he's honored the transplant by staying clean as far as I know.

Oh, I didn't know that about him...yeah, you'd like to think the least they could do was take it easy on the new liver!

he's done it so many times, it's essentially a word for word script now. i'm getting pretty tired of it myself. the transplant happened over ten years ago, didn't it? i mean it's great that he has an opportunity to honor the kid who did it for him but it's just getting a little old.

In light of recent events, maybe Bob should start one on "memory loss prevention research"...you know, advice on games that help you with avoiding memory loss, and research on the new "smart pill", etc., etc., etc.

I still think that one of the other band members should chime in with a pitch for "fashion awareness week", and suggest Bob serve as Grand Poobah for the main event.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Another serious nonDEAD (post 95 shows) query...uh...what? nootropics

Wo/Man,
Taking another chance to spread my wings: Nootropics changed by life: piracetam! mmm...good
Also helpful for me in overcoming this -my recently passed midlife cognitive crisis-
Yerba mate, good sceletium (kanna; 100mg bid-ish 1 month lasting good changes) & good kratom (avoid 'frequent' use-as incense only, of course)

Cognitive difficulties from too much fungi/yeast/etc consumption or exposure: try terbinafine (Lamisil AT, OTC) as a liberal '~all-over' after-bath body spray daily 'til the spray bottle's empty. If ANY little cognitive improvement is noted, get an MD to Rx oral terbinafine 20mg for ~3 mo. [There IS a little NEWish medical research to back this up, BTW-MEDLINE refs available]
I write this because there are a lot of sources of fungi/yeast mold everyday like 'fresh' beer/uncooked mushrooms/moldy basements & the great outdoors (e.g.,Vancouver, BC; Johnson City TN) that can really devastate certain people.

I'm not an MD & I've never played one on TV, but I actually do have a PhD in a hard(ly) science. I am not licensed anywhere for anything..... Lame discLAiMER...Lamest.

I hope this helps somebody-now you know how much I like to ramble. This ramble, however, is hidden, buried deep in this thread.

God Bless America & the rest of the planet too!
& now back to discus-ing the only band that did what they do (ooooh yeah says the Kool-Aid Man-Mr. Bobby Weir) :
